The Route des Grandes-Alpes
It was in 1910 that the Touring Club de France hit on the idea of creating the Route des Grandes-Alpes that links Lake Lèman (Thonon-les-Bains) to the Mediterranean Sea. This route is one of Europe’s most prestigious, winding 600km through the Alps and giving access to the highest mountains passes, many of which commemorate places of great achievement for Tour de France competitors; for example, Cormet de Roselend, Col de l’Iseran, Col du Galibier, Col du Lautaret and Col d’Izoard.
Behind each hill you will find architectural clues to the region’s ancient history; religious buildings in which the inhabitants of the Alps once prayed to the saints for the protection of their crops and villages, fortified buildings to protect the borders - and many others.
